Giovanni Battista Morgagni, born on February 25, 1682, in Forlì, Italy, and passing away on December 5, 1771, in Padua, was a renowned Italian anatomist and pathologist whose contributions were pivotal in elevating pathological anatomy to an exact science.Having earned degrees in philosophy and medicine from Bologna in 1701, Morgagni commenced his career as the prosector to A.M. Valsalva. He played a significant role in assisting Valsalva in the preparation of the acclaimed work "De Aure Humana" (1704), focusing on the anatomy and diseases of the ear. Subsequently, Morgagni succeeded Valsalva as an anatomical demonstrator before assuming the professorship of medicine in Padua in 1710, later ascending to the chair of anatomy in 1715.Morgagni's meticulous anatomical studies culminated in the publication of "Adversaria Anatomica" (1706–1719), which solidified his reputation as a precise anatomist. However, his most influential work emerged in 1761 with "De Sedibus et Causis Morborum per Anatomen Indagatis" (The Seats and Causes of Diseases Investigated by Anatomy). This seminal text, comprising 640 detailed dissections, established him as a pioneer of morbid anatomy, emphasizing the necessity of integrating anatomical knowledge into diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. Despite his groundbreaking contributions to pathological anatomy, Morgagni remained firmly rooted in clinical medicine, maintaining an active practice and rejecting any notion of separating the science from its practical applications. His holistic approach garnered widespread respect and cemented his legacy as a revered clinician and scholar. Read more
