  • The Tabernaemontana genus belongs to the dogbane family, Apocynaceae, which is found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. These plants are typically evergreen shrubs or small trees with glossy leaves. Many species are known for their milky sap and fragrant, white flowers.
  • The Florida Gardenia is an easy-to-grow and rewarding, tall-growing, old heirloom flowering shrub that is the perfect choice for lighting up lightly shaded nooks and corners. It is a long-lived plant that requires only basic care to thrive and can frequently be found growing unattended on old home sites. Delicate, pure white, very lightly fragrant semi-double flowers begin appear in summer and decorate the large, open, tree-like 5 to 7 ft bush until mid-fall.
  • Care: When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining, slightly acidic soil in a lightly shaded location. Water as needed to maintain adequate soil moisture. Feed a good-quality, bloom-boosting fertilizer with the initial planting and annually thereafter in the spring. Prune after flowering to maintain shape.
  • Indoor Growing: The Florida Gardenia needs high light, warm temperatures with a day/night differential, and high humidity. It does not adapt easily to indoor growing conditions.
  • Climate: Tabernaemontana species are tropical and recommended for USDA zones 9, 10, and 11. Cold protection is recommended in all zones for optimal appearance, earliest flowering, and overall plant health.
