You can please turn on the keyboard backlight by turning off automatic adjustments:
(1) Stay in System Preferences, otherwise open it again from the Apple menu.
(2) Click on “Displays” then look under the “Display” tab.
(3) Unselect the checkbox next to “Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes”
(4) Close System Preferences.
